The theme

In section four we learned that racism was a big issue during this time.  One way we learned this was when Curley's wife came into the barn and told Crooks that he was not worthy. Many ways that this story shows it is that he is not allowed to be in the same bunkhouse as the other workers. Crooks is not allowed in the bunkhouse to play cards or to talk to the other workers.

Another theme of the story learned in section four was that no one wants to be alone. The one way that we learn this is when Lennie goes into crook's bunkhouse. Crooks tells Lennie how he is lucky to have someone to talk to. Crooks wishes that he could go into the bunkhouse with the other guys. Crooks tells Lennie how he wishes he could play cards and talk to the other workers. When Candy and Curley's wife comes into the barn he tells them that since he's no allowed in their bunkhouse they should not be in his either. Curley's wife also speaks of not wanting to be alone. She tells them that she just wants someone to talk to.
